The Massachusetts Division of Occupational Safety and the Department of Public Safety have passed regulations for excavation and trench safety. Cities and towns across the Commonwealth must administer permits for anyone planning to dig a trench. The Selectboard has appointed Gill's Highway Superintendent as the person responsible for issuing trench permits. Permits must be obtained prior to the excavation of a trench, with the exception of emergencies. In an emergency, a permit must be obtained as soon as the Town Garage is open during regular business hours (Mondays through Thursdays 6:00 am until 4:00 pm).
